The latest archive film in our The Race Presents series is the 1976 British Grand Prix - as UK viewers saw it at the time. The dramatic race was one of the pivotal moments in Niki Lauda and James Hunt's iconic championship battle - and the result only became final two months later when a legal row over whether on-the-road winner Hunt should have been allowed to take the restart went in Ferrari's favour and Lauda inherited the victory. UK TV viewers couldn't watch the race live because the BBC declined to show it due to concerns over some of the sponsorship deals in the field, include the Surtees team's backing from condom manufacturer Durex. So the CSS Promotions agency that represented race and Lotus sponsor JPS (and Durex too!) found backing to create this highlight edit that was shown one week later on ITV - and which you can enjoy in its original form here too, courtesy of Pit Lane Productions/Formula 1 Films.
