The gundrill is a single-edged tool without self-centering. When positioning the drill, the tool must be guided through a drill bush or pilot hole. The quality of the pilot hole affects the drilling performance (tool life, centerline deviation, etc.) Procedure: ➞ A pilot hole (1.5 - 3.0 x D) is made to guide the deep hole drilling tool. ➞ The gundrill is fed into the drill bush or pilot hole while non rotating or rotated slowly at (under 50 rpm). Then the coolant and the machine spindle should get started. ➞ After reaching the drilling depth the coolant is switched off and the tool is retracted from the bore with the tool at standstill or at a very slow speed (under 50 rpm). botek offers a wide range of pilot drills, with and without internal coolant supply, coated and uncoated for drilling depths from 1 x D - 3 x D.
