In 1873, a man by the name of Horatio Spafford sent his wife, Anna, and their four daughters across the Atlantic Ocean to Paris, where they planned to spend Christmas. Horatio was to soon follow them, after taking care of some business interests at home in Chicago. However, tragedy struck when their ship struck an ocean liner, and was capsized. Anna was the only one who survived. When she reached Europe, she sent Horatio a telegram message that read, “Saved, alone. What shall I do?” Horatio immediately sailed for Wales, to reunite with his beloved wife. As Horatio was passing over the very site of the shipwreck that took the lives of his daughters, he wrote the poem that would become the lyrics to this hymn. I can only imagine the crushing feelings of hopelessness and despair Horatio and Anna must’ve felt when they lost their children. But somehow, they were able to find hope and joy that would carry them through the rest of their lives. They would later go on to do magnificent works, including philanthropic ventures, and Anna, after Horatio died, even opened up a children’s hospital in Jerusalem. At times, life can bestow on us overwhelming depression, anxiety, pain, and fear. But remember this; we are promised hope, peace, and enduring joy if we endure. Whatever you’re struggling with right now, I would encourage you to keep moving forward, “for tomorrow, the Lord will do wonders among you (Joshua 3:5).” Lyrics: When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, When sorrows like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.
