Arany János and Toldi In this video, we explore one of the most important figures of Hungarian literature: Arany János, a key poet of the Hungarian Romantic era. Today, I focus on one of his most famous works: Toldi, a long narrative poem. Toldi represents a prototype of many heroic figures from Hungarian folklore and history. The hero, Toldi Miklós, is a symbol. While Toldi is a literary creation, historical research suggests that there may have been a strong man with this name hundreds of years ago. The poem’s introduction is called Előhang. Even beginners can grasp key ideas with the help of the vocabulary list provided at the end of this video. By going through these words, you get an idea of the meaning and how Arany introduces his hero. Vocabulary from the Introduction (Előhang): pásztor – shepherd tűz – fire pásztortűz – shepherd’s fire, campfire ég a tűz – the fire is burning ősz; ősszel – autumn; in autumn éjszaka; őszi éjszaka – night; autumn night … (full list continues in the video) Links to the full poem and recitations: I could recite the poem myself, but since it is about a strong man, it sounds much more powerful when performed by a famous actor. I will share one of the most powerful recitations recorded decades ago, but still considered by many to be the best. The sound quality has been updated. 🗣️ Full recitation by a Hungarian author: Előadja: Básti Lajos ℗ 1996 HUNGAROTON RECORDS LTD. He had a favorite bench under the oak trees . Oak trees live for a very long time, so some of them may still be there today. 📖 Poem by Arany János: A tölgyek alatt (Under the Oaks) Source: [https] ://mek.oszk.hu/00500/00597/html/vs187701.htm 🎙️📖 I am reciting the first two verses of the poem in another video: • Arany János – A tölgyek alatt | Learn Hung... When Arany János was very old and no longer able to take his regular walks on the island, he made a drawing of the island, capturing his favorite place where he spent time and wrote poems. ✍️📜 Sketch of Margaret Island Artist: Arany János Source: [https] ://mek.oszk.hu/00500/00596/html/msziget/mszigetterkep/msziget_mtak_aj.jpg Disclaimer: While many topics discussed here are relevant to the Hungarian Cultural Knowledge Exam, this video is not intended to be a complete or official exam preparation course.
