180 CALM systems The tank warfare has entered a new era where the heavily armoured tracked vehicles are no longer invincible. The new generation ATGMS & NLWAS can easily defeat the tank armours turning them to rubbles in no time. The loitering munitions can be even greater threat than ATGMS & NLAWS due to their extended range & remote operation far away from the conflict zone. In the lights of the same, The Ministry of Defence has released an RFP to procure 180 Canister-Launched Anti-Armour Loiter Munition (CALM) Systems. CALM System (CALM) System will be used by the Mechanised Infantry and Armoured units. It will provide them capability to undertake remote controlled / unmanned actions at beyond visual range / stand-off ranges of up to 15 km to destroy enemy’s Armoured Fighting Vehicles with a HEAT warhead. Calm should have provision to be launched from an Armoured Fighting Vehicles. The Ground Control Station (GCS) should be rugged with provision to control LM from at least 500 metres from parent AFV. The LM should have Launch Altitude up to 4500 meters above MSL. The maximum weight of LM should be 25 Kg each with canister. It should have an operational range of 15 km. It will have max loitering time of 15mins from the point of launch and endurance of 60 mins. It should be able to fly in day and night mode and should be able to abort the mission and recovered. It should be able to perform direct as well as top attack. The type of warhead is used in LM is High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) with penetration power of atleast 500mm RHA. CALMS will have at least 3 reserved LM and one LM in ready to launch state. It should have accuracy of less than 1m CEP in top attack mode. The LM will have 2-way data encrypted link and navigate back to AFV when the data link fails. It will have in built raster and contours with feasibility to function with DSM & Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System or NavIC The delivery of the equipment including fitment on AFVs will be completed within 12 months from the date of signing of contract. Desi SkyStriker but mounted on AFV If you compare the capabilities of CALM and SkyStriker loitering munition of Israel, they are almost same, however CALM will be mounted in AFV. Last year, Indian Army has contracted a deal with a JV between Bengaluru-based Alpha Design Technologies & Israel’s Elbit systems for the supply of 100 units of the SkyStriker Loitering Munition which is already complete. In this category, EEL - a subsidiary of Solar Industries has also launched its Nagastra series of loitering munitions. Nagastra 3 is a Vehicle mounted tube / cassette launched Loiter Munition (LM-2) that can carry 5-10 kg warheads to a range of 40-100 km. This will be a rugged and mobile system where in six LM2, launcher, generator, UPS, and other support equipment can be accommodated in a 1 T class of vehicle. CALM is going to be a cost-effective indigenous loitering munition that will be capable of precise tactical strikes against the tanks. The technology-enabled CALM will improve the performance, situational awareness, and survivability by providing direct-fire aerial-precision capabilities to manoeuvrable troops and Mechanized infantry.
