Todays video is another from our fall trip out west. This short video takes a look at Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Kanab, Utah. We also take a quick tour of a nearby BLM Campground - Ponderosa Grove. And we also need your help in planning our next fall trip to Colorado! Coral Pink Sand Dunes is located at 12500 Sand Dune Rd, Kanab, Utah. The park is 3,730 acres, at an elevation of approx 6,000 feet and is estimated to be 10,000 to 15,000 years old. We also really liked that it is dog friendly so Desi could come along as well! The sand comes from Navajo sandstone and are created by three factors - sand, high winds and a unique influence upon the wind. There is a notch between the Moquith and Moccasin mountains and when wind is funneled through this notch, it can carry sand grains from the eroding Navajo sandstone (the Venturi effect). The wind velocity decreases in the open valley and the sand is deposited, creating the dunes. And keep your eyes out - you may be lucky enough to see the Coral Pink tiger beetle, only found here. We were not lucky enough although we did keep a look out for them! The park has a variety of things to do. There is a campground in the park, an observation deck and picnic areas. While you can just walk the dunes, a popular activity is to rent sand boards or sleds at the office and take a ride down the dunes. The park is also a popular destination for ATV riders and bout 90% of the dunes are open for riding. The campground in the park has a mix of dry camping and water/electric sites. There is also a dump station and the prices ranged from $25-40 But, if you are looking for something close but a little less expensive, check out the BLM Campground Ponderosa Grove just 5 miles away off Hancock Rd. There are 34 campsites that offer no hookups but at a $12 a day price. There are picnic tables, fire rings, dumpster and vault toilets. It is a first come first serve campground and when we went by on a Sat in late October the campground was full! But on a Wednesday a week later, only one tent was seen. Lastly - let us know your favorite things to do / places to say / food to eat in Colorado! We are looking to go from the Rockies to Mesa Verde and stop at lots in between! As always - thanks for watching and happy camping! Music by Epidemic Sound - www.epidemicsound.com *This video is for entertainment purposes only as we are not RV experts.
