Arthur Junod Sublime Harmonie mechanism with double motors and Junod’s distinctive safety check in a large box (26" wide x 11" deep x 8.6" high), s/n 42084, gamme no. 698 (or possibly 869), two combs, each of 31 teeth, playing twelve tunes in order or individually selected in any order, manufactured ca. 1894. The tune sheet exhibits several errors and does not identify any of the composers. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify ten of the pieces positively and two of them (6 and 9) with reasonable probability. They are (1) Giuseppe Verdi, Quartet, “Bella figlia dell’amore,” Rigoletto , Act III (1851); (2) Alphons Czibulka, Stephanie Gavotte , op. 312 (1880); (3) Carl Millöcker, Am Neckarstrand Walzer, no. 5, based on themes from Die sieben Schwaben [not Schwalben as on the tune sheet] (1887); (4) Richard Wagner, Chœur des fiançailles [Bridal Chorus], Lohengrin , Act III, scene 1 (1850); (5, not 6 as on the tune sheet) Georges Bizet, “Chanson de Toréador,” Carmen , Act II (1875; rev. 1883); (6, not 5 as on the tune sheet) Gustav Weingarten (?; unconfirmed), Metropolitan Polka [There are numerous polkas with this title, all of which can be eliminated by examining the published score. No score for Weingarten’s composition has been located, but he seems the most likely on the basis of his date and nationality]; (7) Giuseppe Verdi, Marche égyptienne [Marcia trionfale], Aida , Act II (1871); (8) Gustav Steffens, Deutsches Kaiserlied, “Kornblumen” [Cornflower Song] (ca. 1880s); (9) Franz Abt (?; unconfirmed), “Der Fischerknabe” [The Fisher Boy] [whether or not this is a setting of Schiller’s poem, there are dozens of songs with this title; many of which can be eliminated by examining the published score. A score for Abt’s setting has thus far not been located, but he seems to be a likely candidate because of the popularity of his songs, especially “Wenn die Schwalben heimwärts zieh’n,” which is found on other Junod mechanisms]; (10) Siegmund Schlichting, Stettiner Kreuz Polka (1883); (11) Alfred Cellier, “Be wise in time, oh Phyllis mine,” Dorothy , Act I, no. 2 (1886; rev. 1888); (12) Sir Arthur Sullivan, “A Wand’ring Minstrel I,” The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipu , Act I, no. 2 (1885; rev. 1888, 1895).
