Menstruation is a cyclical shedding of the endometrium. This is also called a natural phenomenon. Women have to go through period changes and period cramps because of the change in hormones in the body. Hormones work as a chemical messenger. The ovaries release estrogen and progesterone. These hormones cause the uterine lining (or the womb) to build up. The built-up liner is ready for the fertilized egg to be attached to and start developing. If there is no fertilized egg, the linen will break down and bleed. Then the same process is going to happen again. It usually takes about a month for the coating to build up and then break down. This is why most girls and women get their period once a month. In India, it is called Menstrual taboo i.e. unclean.
