Join me as I create a minimal house track from start to finish in Ableton Live! In this video, I walk you through my process, starting with setting the tempo (initially 120 BPM, later adjusted to 123 BPM) and building the core rhythm with a 909 kit for the kick and offbeat hi-hats. Artists such as DJOKO, Max Chapman, Sarge Malone, James Dexter, and Kiasmos are just a few artists that I’ve been listening to for inspiration. See how I experiment with different percussive elements using a 707 kit and adding effects like Reverb and overdrive to shape the sound. I then lay down a bouncy bass line using a real bass guitar processed with Guitar Rig 6. Discover how I use the Korg monologue to generate minimal melodies, enhancing them with Reverb and delay. I structure the track by building intensity with sections that include and exclude the kick drum and bass. I also incorporate a pad sound from the OP-1 for added depth, processed with delay, and use a 606 kit for an open hi-hat pattern. Learn about converting audio to MIDI for a synth part using Isotopes Iris 2 and how I use automation on various parameters including overdrive, filter cutoffs, and send levels to add movement and interest to the track. Finally, I discuss my initial mastering step using a one-knob plugin for the first bounce. 0:02:08 - Experimenting with percussion (707 kit) and effects 0:04:42 - Creating the bass line (real bass guitar with Guitar Rig 6) 0:07:51 - Generating melodies (Korg monologue) 0:11:31 - Structuring the track 0:12:05 - Adding a pad sound (OP-1) 0:15:15 - Open hi-hat pattern (606 kit) and converting audio to MIDI 0:20:13 - Playthrough 0:25:43 - Reflections on the track I share my thoughts on the finished track, highlighting what I think works well, such as the synth parts, and areas for potential improvement, like the bassline and drum sounds. For this session, I used Ableton Live, a Focusrite 18i20, the Moog Minituar, the Teenage Engineering OP1, a Korg Monologue and a custom electric bass! Let me know what you think in the comments below!
