Authors Karen Liao, MD, and Lilian Ameh, MD recap the lessons learned during the implementation of an innovative training track incorporating surgical obstetric training into a three-year family medicine residency program. Launched in 2021, the Structured Training for Rural Enhancement of Community Health in Obstetrics (STRETCH-OB) program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford trains residents in evidence-based maternity care for rural and underserved communities. Integrated into the Family Medicine Residency, it offers enhanced clinical experience and skills in higher-risk obstetrics. With high satisfaction rates among residents and preceptors, STRETCH-OB graduates are now practicing with full obstetric privileges, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in preparing future physicians for rural health care challenges.
