Officer Jonathan Wiese and Ufo were partners in the San Diego Police Department K9 unit for 7.5 years, before Ufo's retirement in March of 2019. Once canines retire from their duties, the liability is turned over to the dog's handler, and the officers have the option to keep the dog. Ufo went home with Officer Wiese, and now he spends the days barking at chickens on a ranch in Ramona. The K9 unit is critical for the safety of the citizens of San Diego. They're a vital de-escalation tool. Often times, the mere presence of a canine on-scene leads suspects to simply give themselves up. For over 15 years, the community has stepped up to pay for the police service dogs that work with SDPD K9, making San Diego safer. The SDPD has 36 police dogs, a number they hope to increase to fifty within the next two years.
