However, the Count of Virneburg also had a good relationship with the Archdiocese of Cologne (Köln), which in turn led to conflicts with Trier, after which Trier decided to place its "own" people at the castle in Monreal. Löwenstein Castle has had to endure a lot. The castle was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1632 and in 1689 it was the French who destroyed the Löwenburg. When the 30-year war was over, an important cloth / textile industry developed in Monreal.
