When cultural landscapes overgrow - case from arctic

Focus here is the last century of agriculture and change in cultural landscapes, and we look at local tenant farm systems (husmannsystemet). We are in Troms in Northern Norway, in a cultural landscape where different cultures have coexisted for thousands of years. The tenant farm system in Norway lasted from the 17th century to the 19th century. The tenant farm system here is therefore a part of small chapter in a long cultural history. The tenants were a propertyless group in the farming community. The emergence of the system was due to the fact that it was not allowed to divide farms. Part of the farm was therefore offered by a landowner for rental, with or without land and house. The tenant farmer paid rent with his own work for the land owner. In Northern Norway and Western Norway, they often were engaged in fishing in addition. It was not unusual that houses belonged to the tenants, and the small, wooden houses were easy to bring with them if the tenant family moved. In Northern Norway, the tenant farms are often Sami settlements, and here tenant farmers often were called "shore sitters" (strandsittere). The tenant farm in this movie has some cultivated land, which is still visible today. But the forest has grown and taken over the surrounded cultural landscape. The tenant farm system was growing strongly until the mid-19th century, and ceased somewhat towards the end of the 20th century. There are several explanations for the reasons why the system ended. Industrialization made manual labor less necessary. The money economy grew, and more people were able to buy tenant farms and become independent farmers themselves. In Norway, many migrated to America to make a better life for themselves. A change in the law in 1928 gave tenants the right to buy tenant farms. In this movie, agriculture has ended, nature is taking back, tradition and history are disappearing in the cultural landscape. Change happens fast.
