From the coming album Amhráin Aogán Ó Rathaille. ‘Gile na Gile’ is Aogán Ó Rathaille's Sui Generis epic masterpiece, Aisling. A vision of mysterious delight and knowledge which, once the Jacobite content is declared, descends into a squalid, erotic nightmare of despair. ‘Its pace, imagery and verbal brilliance have not been equalled in Irish and, while obviously inspired by political passion, the poem remains difficult to interpret. ‘Gile na gile has all the majesty of the Aisling, and all its redolent promise, but this is proven, as the song's narrative unfolds; to be a delusion. For as the poet is entranced by the vision and follows her flight past impenetrable bogs to a magical place; there he finally comes to the scene of her disgrace and finds her in a desecrated, debased quarter roughly handled by insolent brutish men. The veil is torn. He sees her shame and her grief and is left shattered and despondent.
