The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill passed its third reading by 314 votes to 291, a majority of 23, and will now head to the House of Lords for a further vote. Outside parliament, supporters of assisted dying celebrated as they heard the news. The majority for assisted dying has decreased from 55 votes at the second reading to 23 today. The decrease reflects how some MPs have had disageements with the drafting of Kim Leadbeater’s bill. Right To Life UK, the pro-life advocacy group, warned the bill “still faces an uphill battle” to get through the House of Lords. Catherine Robinson, the group’s spokeswoman, said that although the bill passed the Commons today, “momentum remains with its opponents, with support consistently falling every time MPs have considered it”. Robinson added that the bill left the Commons lacking a majority, with fewer than half of all MPs voting for it at its final stage. “The bill still faces an uphill battle to reach royal assent.
