The 517-metre Innocent railway tunnel - Scotland's first railway tunnel - opened in 1931. The tunnel through Holyrood Park was the final leg of a railway line used for hauling coal from the pits of Midlothian to Edinburgh. Today the long, damp, and dingy tunnel sees a different kind of traveller. The video starts at the tenements on St Leonard's Street, showing the route to the North (upper) end of the tunnel along a safe bicycle route. EG originally shot a video of the Innocent Railway in 2008 (see • Innocent Railway Tunnel in Edinburgh ). The walls inside the tunnel were very different then. After rattling through the tunnel, the Innocent bike route opens up into a lush, green pedestrian-cycle route of adjacent Holyrood Park, Bawsinch Nature Reserve, and Prestonfield golf course. As part of Route 1 on the National Cycle Network, the cycle route can be taken all the way down to London (if you want), but we stop at Duddingston Rd West. The video ends with a quick Google Earth fly-through of the route. Find out more about the Innocent Railway on EdinburghGuide.com. Soundtrack is "Dasein" by Nihilore Video production: R Alstead
