Alright, this is the big one. After experimenting with the “Tommy baby” scene on creating a complex sound mix, I decided to give the chase a shot. It turned out to be much more time consuming and difficult than I expected. There are a couple of blemishes here and there but this is definitely my most complex and detailed project to date. Here’s a rundown of the edit for those who are curious: Essentially, I wanted to sort of make a hybrid edit of the chase that contains the voices and climactic nature of the test screening (the Director’s Cut), but has the quicker pacing and score from the Final Cut. With the Magic Railroad team’s recent reveals, I felt like I finally had enough material to put together my idealized version of the chase sequence. The most obvious change is the voice work, which is mostly sourced from the test screening. I had to heavily modify the voice clips to help them blend better with the surrounding Final Cut clips. John Bellis’ Thomas was the most difficult, as he was notoriously pitched up in the test screening, and the clarity of the recordings suffered as a result. So I had to correct the pitch and bring the audio quality up, which was quite tedious. I think he sounds okay but there still could be some improvement. Joe Matheson’s Diesel 10 was much easier to tackle, since his delivery is so raw and powerful. I decided to keep Splodge’s final voices since I preferred Neil Crone and Kevin Frank’s banter to how Michael Angelis handled them, not that he did a bad job of course. The score is a bit different too. The beginning and end of the scene have different music present than in the Final Cut. The scene with Mr. C and Junior utilizes a piece from Toy Story 2, as used in the test screening. The ending shots of the two villains defeated are scored with some music from the first Toy Story, as I felt it was fitting. Some of you may be curious about the visual effects, as I attempted to fix most of the temp ones. The only shots that I didn’t touch were the shots from the assembly cut and a couple of the Boomer shots. Using the old leaked chase from years ago as a VFX source was challenging, as it has a time marker and a security watermark. I couldn’t remove them entirely but I did the best I could with what I had. Once the actual test screening is released in full along with the Director’s Cut, I can make a complete version of this video. But this will do for now. Reconstructing the sound effects mix and fixing the VFX was much more difficult than I had anticipated, and this project ended up taking about 2 months to complete. It was a lot of trial and error, but I’m really satisfied with the end result and I hope you guys are as well.
