Our record breaking 2.1-mile (3.4km) long Colne Valley Viaduct, the UK's longest railway bridge, is now structurally complete. The gently-curved structure on London’s north-western edge stretches across the Colne Valley near the M25 motorway and the village of Denham. It will carry high speed trains running to and from the capital at speeds of up to 320km/h (200mph). It is one of 500 bridging structures on the HS2 project which also include footbridges, drainage culverts and innovative 'green bridges' for wildlife. Construction began near Denham on London’s north western edge in 2021. In September 2024 the last of exactly 1,000 giant concrete pre-cast segments used to build the structure’s deck was fitted into place. Weighing up to 140 tonnes and made on site, each one is uniquely shaped to achieve the viaduct’s curve and the varying lengths of its 57 arch spans that reach down to piers built on land and in two lakes. Following installation of the final giant concrete pre-cast deck segment in September 2024, our construction partners and their expert supply chain has completed installation of: ✅ 1,514 parapets and 4-metre-high noise barriers on each side of the viaduct ✅ 4 miles of robust kerb with over 3,600m3 of concrete poured ✅ A high-performance waterproofing membrane ✅ Internal drainage systems and structural health monitoring systems Delivered by Align JV, a joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine and VolkerFitzpatrick Ltd, it drew upon international expertise to create a landmark structure to carry high-speed trains in a gentle curve across land and water. The design of the #ColneValleyViaduct was inspired by the flight of a stone skipping across the water with a series of elegant spans, some up to 80m long, carrying the railway around 10m above the surface of the lakes, River Colne and Grand Union Canal. Set low into the landscape, wider spans carry the viaduct across the lakes, with narrower spans for the approaches. Find out more: https://www.hs2.org.uk/building-hs2/v... HS2 Ltd’s CEO, Mark Wild, is resetting the project to make sure it can be delivered to the lowest reasonable cost. While this work in ongoing, HS2 and its contractors continue to make progress on the civil engineering, such as viaducts, earthworks, stations and tunnels. When complete, HS2 will improve connections between London and the West Midlands, with trains running further north on existing lines. This new high-speed railway will create quicker and far more reliable journeys, driving economic growth while crucially freeing up space for more local trains on the most congested part of the existing West Coast Main Line. 📢 Subscribe for the latest news and updates from Britain’s high-speed railway, HS2.
