Steamed Hams but Chalmers has to help Skinner remember his lines

He had stuck through with Skinner during the divorce, then the drinking, but now coke? That was just too far. This wasn't the man Chalmers fell in love with anymore, and he thought deep down, even with his drug-addled brain, Skinner must know by now too. Skinner's performance had been deteriorating for months. The audience could put up with small mishaps and slightly longer-than-usual delays - that's the nature of live performaces after all - but it was just getting sad now. Chalmers helped where he could, of course, no actor wants to see a fellow performer do badly, less of all one he was this close to. Chalmers lay in bed thinking back to those words the producer whispered last Friday night. Not only Broadway, the West End too, words that could make a grown man in this line of work cry with joy, this had been his dream... no... our dream... His musings were disturbed by Skinner's movement in the dark. 1:22am, Chalmers thought, he must think I'm asleep by now. This was nothing new, but it hurt just as much this time as it did the first. He dare not speak up as he had many times before, it was always the same argument, with inevitably the same conclusion. Chalmers stifled his tears as best he could as Skinner quietly returned to his side of the bed. At 9am sharp, Chalmers rang the producer and spoke just three words, "I'll do it." Overjoyed laughter erupted from the phone with talk of booking flights as Chalmers quietly hung up. "Who was that?" asked Skinner, while shaving at the bathroom mirror. "The producer," began Chalmers as he walked into the bathroom, "he had some concerns about our last performance and wanted to make sure we rehearse properly today." "What, Steamed Hams? " chuckled Skinner, "we've done that ten times this month alone. Don't tell me you don't know your lines off heart by now?" It hurt Chalmers more than he could speak to lie to this man, but you don't get to where he is in the business without being able to hide your emotions well. "I know, I know, but he does have a point. There's no harm in placating him though, right?" "He has a point? Oh, what's gotten into you? Ripping into the producer is practically part of our morning routine," Skinner jovially replied as he reached for the hand towel, "don't tell me you're falling for him." Skinner chuckled as he dried his face while Chalmers exaggeratedly rolled his eyes. "Obviously not, Seymour. Although I do think our last few performances have been a bit... half-assed." As Skinner put the towel down Chalmers noticed Skinner's expression had soured, he turned to face Chalmers directly. Skinner spoke lowly and affirmatively, "I am a goddamn master of my craft. I don't do half-assed. Perhaps if your head wasn't so far up the producer's ass you might've noticed by now." "I-" Chalmers stopped himself. He could feel the anger well up inside him, but they'd been down this road before. The anger, the violence, more work for the make-up artists... "T'ch, whatever," Skinner barged past Chalmers, "I'll see you tonight." "Seymour-" Skinner continued to get dressed, hastening towards the front door as he tied his shoes. "I love you, Seymour." Skinner left without a word, Chalmers collapsed in tears as his frustration rose to the surface. [...] 8:45pm... and not a peep from Seymour all day. Chalmers stood outside the theatre as he glanced at his phone, expecting... not even he's sure anymore. He had been at the theatre all day, mostly in discussions with the producer - purely about work to start with, but Chalmers couldn't maintain his composure for long. This was to be Chalmers's last Steamed Hams and if that was the case, he was going to make damn sure Skinner puts on a decent showing this time. Chalmers noticed a man dressed like Skinner stumbling along the pavement towards him, Chalmers could smell the booze off that man from 10ft away. Chalmers sighed internally as the realisation hit that this man was Skinner, it was going to be a tough night. "Right on time Seymour, you've got 10 minutes to get cleaned up," Chalmers spoke without enough irony for Skinner to understand in his current condition. "That'sss grEAt," Skinner slurred, "let'sss break a LEG Gare-bear." "After you, Seymour." Chalmers opened the side door and ushered Skinner into the building. Chalmers kept his anguish in check. His make-up was perfect, it would be too late to fix it if he cried. He struck the metal door with his fist and exhaled slowly, he started to speak out loud to himself. "Well, this is it. One final hurrah. You can do it, Gary. Get out there, do what you do, and drag Seymour to the finish line if you have to." Chalmers closed his eyes, breathed deeply, and entered the theatre.
