Here are some video highlights taken between Taormina-Giardini and Catania (in Sicily) during my trip on InterCity Notte ICN 1963 from Milano to Siracusa in Nov 2022. My aim was to show how Mt Etna (and her foothills) completely dominates the landscape. This is actually quite hard, as the volcano is so big, you can't fit all of it in one frame! Luckily I have a cheap 1980p sports camera with a wide angle lends that does an excellent job. I have used it before for "from the window" video and the wide angle actually works quite well. I was in the MU sleeper coach of the 5 coach night train (it was top'n tailed by E464 locos)- I discovered it was just possible to push the camera out through the narrow window opening and hold it in place against a ridge. This produced fantastic results whilst totally safe. There was of course the risk of dropping the camera and losing it and the video, but it was only cheap- not like losing a Go-Pro! Later on, I switched to an iPhone to get some close ups of Etna. It was a fantastic, warm sunny day, with the sun behind the mountain and this made things difficult, but you can still see clearly the "Valle del Bove" looking like a massive bite taken out of the side of the mountain. The volcano wasn't erupting, but was de-gassing quite vigourously that day. Apparently, the top section is closed off at the moment due to risk of eruption. As far as the railway was concerned, I managed to video the section between Mascali and Giarre-Riposto. Here, there are three railway alignements. The first is a pre 1928 deviation- this was partially destroyed by a lava flow in 1928 (including the original Mascali station). The second line is the post 1928 deviation built to replace that. The third is the current, double track alignment built in the late 80s/90s. This starts just south of Fiumefreddo. Interestingly, I have discovered that there is stub of this upgraded version that heads north for a bit. This has no track on it, but includes a completely unused, double track railway bridge (labelled on the video- it is clearly visible on Google earth). This is clearly a stub that could one day be a double track cutoff to the single track Taormina section, linking up with the other double track section at Giampileri. The old line sweeps in as if it is a diverging junction to this unbuilt line. One point I forgot to label was that you can see the Circumetnea link to Porto emerging at 15:05. Unfortunately, I mucked up filming Catania depot (and its lines of ALn668s) AGAIN (it was out of focus last time). Oh well! I guess I will have to go back another time!
