In the heart of a silent, dusty alley, where no sound but the moaning of the wind echoes in the ears of forgotten houses, lives a boy named **Milad**. A teenager who has not yet understood his childhood, but instead of playing with friends, his life has thrown him into the field of suffering and loneliness. His older brother **Wali**, the breadwinner of the family, has been unjustly imprisoned behind cold bars; and their younger sister **Ruqyeh**, with always wet eyes, whispers her prayer for freedom every night. Since Vali was taken away, it seems as if the sun has also become angry with their house. Their mother cried so much that she can no longer stand. But Milad has turned his heart to stone, because he knows that if he bends down, the pillars of the house will break. He wakes up before sunrise in the morning, washes his thin hands in ice water, and goes to work. Wherever he can: construction worker, garbage collector, porter in the market, even working nights in a bakery. Just so that maybe, just maybe, he can save up money to hire a lawyer, so that Vali can come back. His hands are bruised from the hard work, his skin cracked, but every time his eyes fall on Vali’s photo on the wall, he says: “Brother, there’s still breath, there’s still hope.” He misses Vali, for those nights they used to talk together until late, for the sound of his laughter, for the affection that has now been replaced by silence. Ruqiya asks Milad: “Brother, when will Vali come?” and Milad just smiles bitterly and says: “Soon, very soon…” But his heart is in turmoil, because he knows that “soon” means maybe months, maybe years. No one has felt pain with their flesh and skin like Milad. With every step he takes, it’s as if he’s carrying a mountain on his shoulders. At night, when everyone else is asleep, Milad goes to the rooftop, raises his head to the sky, and says with bitterness: “God, give me the strength to keep this family together. Just bring Vali back…” Sometimes he wipes his tears with his sleeve so that Ruqyeh won’t see. He doesn’t cry for himself, he cries for a brother who is unjustly imprisoned, for a sister who sleeps with Vali’s photo at night. Milad is not a hero. He’s just a simple boy whose back the world broke, but he didn’t bend. Standing, with wounds, with pain, with love… And this standing is the most painful form of manhood.
