Alaska contains 86 active volcanoes. Among these, there are a surprisingly high number of volcanoes which have produced eruptions between 10 and 50 times the size of the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens. One of these volcanoes which produced a supermassive eruption is a little known volcano called Mount Katmai. It contains a 2.6 mile wide caldera and has a fascinating geologic history. This video will discuss this volcano, the massive eruption which formed its large caldera, and mention what its future hazards are.
