Seoul Walk: Cheongdam Station to Gangnam-gu Office Station

#4k #walkingtour #korea When you look at those stops on the Seoul Metropolitan Subway system that only serve one line, you'll find most of them tend to have four exits. A few have two, or even one. A few others five or six. More than that and you're looking at a transfer hub. Unless the one you're looking at is Cheongdam Station on Line 7. There are four gates at the east end of Cheongdam Station bracketing the intersection of Hakdong-ro and Yeongdong-daero. Head west along Hackdong-ro and there are two more. Head further west and you'll find four more, but no intersection! Head even further west and you'll find four more where Hakdong-ro crosses Samseong-ro. That's fourteen total gates along a line that stretches 650 meters. There are subway stations connected to underground shopping centers where you can find that many gates and more, but those extra gates belong to the shopping center and not the station. There's no underground shopping mall at Cheongdam Station. It just has a unique layout. It also has a unique interior, which is why we begin this walk at the east end of the station just at the bottom of Gates 1 and 14, then stay underground to the far end. This used to be a bland, uninteresting space. An interior like all the others on Line 7. Not so now. The place is full of greenery. We see it as soon as we pass through the doors (00:12), where we're greeted by glass columns in the center of the passage and glass cases along the walls, all enclosing leafy stuff. At 00:25, we enter an enclosed rest space displaying various plants and a waterwheel. The greenery continues from one end to the other, occasionally accentuated by the the sounds of insects and birds (as at 05:00). And this is all real vegetation. I can't begin to describe how it has transformed the previously mundane experience of walking through this long subway station. The signage proclaiming "Free Zone" in English is referring to this space being marketed as a "fine dust free zone". In addition to the plant life, the space is equipped with 72 air purifiers and five "air handling units with cleaning filters". All of this is part of a campaign to deal with fine dust pollution. Other spaces in Gangnam are also part of the initiative, including a few underpasses (which we've seen on this channel) and booths at some bus stops. At 08:25 we come to the west end of the station and head out of Gate 7, facing south on Samseong-ro outside Samsung's Rameian LaClassy Apartments. Here, we make a U-turn and then turn west along Hakdong-ro (09:53), where we get a better look at the Raemian Apartments and the neighboring Lotte Castle. Our entire walk is along the northern edge of Samesong-dong which, though it includes the Starfield Coex Mall and numerous office buildings of every size (particulary along the southern border), is a heavily residential neighborhood, with several high-rise and tower apartments, and backstreets packed full of low-rise "villa" apartments. That's especially true of this stretch along Hakdong-ro, where we see apartments everywhere we look, and the office buildings are only a few stories high at most. At 12:20 we approach the grounds of the Gangnam-gu Office. If you ever find youself living in Korea with an ID card and move to a home anywhere in Gangnam District, this is where you'll come for a variety of administrative functions. Just outside it we find one of those "fine dust free zone" booths (12:36), and another at 13:14 at the bus stop across the street. Before they started their Raemian brand of tower apartments, Samsung built a number of "Samsung Apartments" around the city. We can see one of those buildings at 16:10 (the one on the left numbered "101"). At the time, they were a more modern form of the old "match-box style", blocky high-rise apartments that sprung up around the city from the mid-1960s into the 1990s. At 18:48, we approach Gate 1 of Gangnam-gu Office Station (Subway Line 9 and the Bundang Line), into which we descend and bring our walk to a close.
