My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Aragonese language. Aragonese Language The Aragonese language is a Romance language developed in the medieval Kingdom of Aragon and is primarily spoken in the Pyrenees valleys of northern Aragon, Spain. Distinguished from Spanish by its unique phonology and vocabulary, it shares similarities with Occitan and Catalan. Today, it is classified as endangered, with an estimated 10,000–12,000 speakers, mostly elderly or in rural areas. Despite limited official recognition (protected but not co-official under Aragon's 2013 language law), revitalization efforts include educational programs, literature, and digital initiatives to preserve its cultural legacy. Aragonese People and Culture The Aragonese people, rooted in the historic Kingdom of Aragon, take pride in their significant role in the Reconquista and the expansion into the Mediterranean. Despite a sparse, aging population due to rural depopulation, their identity thrives through traditions like the jota (a vibrant dance and music style), festivals such as Zaragoza’s Fiestas del Pilar, and folklore rituals. The cuisine reflects the mountainous terrain with dishes such as ternasco (roast lamb) and migas, while the UNESCO-listed Mudejar architecture showcases a blend of Christian and Islamic artistry. Resilient cultural pride persists through local dialects, artisan crafts, and reverence for their storied past.
