In his youth, Tony Russell "Charles" Brown received classical piano lessons. He earned a college chemistry degree and taught the subject at a Texas high school. During the early 1940s Brown was an apprentice electrician at a California shipyard, but by 1943 in was in L.A. singing and playing a tinkling Nat Cole-like piano with Johnny Moore's Three Blazers. In '45, their recording of "Drifting Blues" reached #1 and was six months on BILLBOARD's R&B chart. Recorded for the 1947 holiday season, the Three Blazers' "Merry Christmas, Baby" peaked at #3 R&B. This is a later solo Brown version.
