Dom Pedro II is the second and last Emperor of Brazil. He ruled for an astounding 58 years. This was the period in Brazilian history that the country developed rapidly and looked poised to compete with the United States as a hemispheric power. He was a man who wasn't that interested in politics, but he always tried to do what was right for Brazil. He spoke multiple languages, and contemporaries were astonished at the depth and breadth of his curiosity. He's one of the great leaders of the 19th century, and if Brazil had continued on the trajectory it was on, he wouldn't be an obscure figure today (outside of Brazil).
