Air conditioning systems collapsed Noisy cicadas competing with the musicians... This was a very challenging and amazing international master class. Four soloists from Europe and the USA came to conduct a piano concerto by Beethoven from the piano. The orchestra was not prepared, so we as conductors had to start from scratch. Fortunately, the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana de Fiesole is a highly committed orchestra, thanks in particular to the tireless dedication of its home conductor Edoardo Rosadini. It is one of the most outstanding national youth orchestras in Italy, just as the music school in Fiesole is an outstanding academy. The heat during these days was extremely oppressive, the air conditioning systems all collapsed, the heat in the closed rooms became stifling and unbearable. The noise of the cicadas was deafening! The young musicians and listeners were stretched to the last drop of their resources. The rehearsals were scheduled for late afternoon, 4 young conductors rehearsed one work each in 5 days. A shortlist was brought to performance. The process of developing the work with the young musicians was incredibly intense. It was an enormously challenging and rewarding experience to work hard together on the work and to bring it to performance in such a short time.
