Welcome back to the workbench where we try to make things — and today we’re continuing work on Revell’s 1971 Oldsmobile 442… or what we’re calling the Faux 442. It’s still a Cutlass at heart, but we’re building it the way 22-year-old me absolutely would have. At this point, the body and bumper finishes are essentially wrapped up, with just one more round of blue paint coming to clean up the sides before everything is locked in. While waiting on that paint, attention shifts back to the interior — specifically the sound system choices that feel right for this car’s backstory. In this episode, I experiment with period-correct speaker ideas, mock up custom-built speaker boxes, and ultimately rethink the approach once real-world fit issues show up. It’s a classic case of a good idea that just doesn’t quite work at scale — but still helps point us in the right direction. 🧰 In This Episode: 🔧 Body and bumper finishes nearing completion 🎨 Blue paint ordered to re-coat body sides 🔊 Exploring rear speaker options for a 22-year-old’s Cutlass build 📦 Scratch-built miniature speaker box mock-up 🔵 Jensen-style blue speaker detail experiment 📐 Test-fitting speakers under the rear window ❌ Why the speaker box idea won’t quite work 🔄 New plan: top-mounted 6x9 speakers on the package tray 🖨️ Considering 3D-printed speaker options ⚡ Planning plug wire routing and 90-degree boots 🌀 Searching for the elusive dog-bone air cleaner 🧠 Parts planning to finish wiring, interior, and final assembly This episode is all about problem-solving and figuring out what actually makes sense at scale — even when a cool idea has to be shelved for a better one. As always, this build is guided heavily by community feedback, so your input matters. 🗣️ Workbench Question: Would you run angled top-mounted 6x9s… or keep it simple with speaker grilles? 👇 Let me know in the comments: • Speaker boxes vs top-mounted speakers • Jensen-style look — worth keeping? • Any leads on a dog-bone air cleaner in scale? • 3D-printed speaker recommendations? We’re very close now — just a few parts, some wiring, and final assembly left. Thanks for hanging out at the bench and helping shape this build. 🔔 Like, Comment & Subscribe to follow the Faux 442 through final assembly. 📸 Instagram: / tandemctelevision 📩 Contact: tandemcomet2246@gmail.com
