Comprehensive Stroke Center Offers Highest Level of Care

The Joint Commission's highest level of stroke care -- an "Advanced Certification" -- is awarded to those hospitals that have specific abilities to receive and treat the most complex stroke cases. Baptist Health Neuroscience Center] Dr. Felipe De Los Rios: For stroke care, there's different places you can go to, to receive stroke care. And stroke can sometimes be quite complicated because therapies have to be delivered fast. So because of that, there are certifications that a hospital can apply for. And there's three levels of certification. There's a stroke ready hospital, which is a hospital that is able to give the basic care for stroke patients. It's usually a smaller hospital which can give a medication that destroys clots, it's called TPA, a clot-buster medication of sorts. Then you also have primary stroke centers that are able to give this IV medication, but also have some other resources, they may have a stroke unit, more inpatient beds and whatnot. And then you have the comprehensive stroke centers. And the comprehensive stroke centers are the larger hospitals that have all the resources that are needed to treat both the simple and the most complex stroke cases. So here at Baptist, we have a comprehensive stroke center, Baptist Hospital of Miami. It's a Joint Commission certified center, and we have everything in place to manage both simple and very complex stroke cases. An example of the resources that we have here at Baptist include a neurologist that's on call 24-7, we also have the same time commitment for neurosurgery, neurointerventional, and advanced neuroimaging. We also are able to run both basic and also complex laboratory services. And we also have a stroke unit, where we have specialized neuroscience nurses and nurse practitioners as well.
