The ESP32 C3 is amazing, it’s cheap, powerful, small and widely available. However, many of the ‘mini’ development boards you can buy at places like AliExpress and Amazon have a major flaw! The WiFi antenna is placed way too close to the other components, this causes significant issues which vastly reduce the WiFi range. For a past project I bought a bag full of the C3 mini’s only to find out they were useless for what I wanted them for {LEDW}, disaster! After a little research online, I found an excellent article by Peter Neufeld {link below}, showing how to add a simple quarter wave wire antenna to the existing on-board ‘chip’ antenna. In this video, I explore this ‘fix’, first looking at the receiver performance of the new antenna, then moving on to optimize the transmit performance by varying the antenna length. Some astounding results are achieved, it's easily possible to triple the usable range of the C3 mini! So now that pile of useless C3’s have a new lease of life!! **UPDATE** Peter Neufeld, who created the original antenna design, has reached out with some really useful information… firstly the antenna he described is shorter than the one shown in the video, the total length is 31 mm including the loop. In the video the antenna is ~30 mm with the loop adding an additional ~15 mm. I’ve compared the RSSI of both designs and found that the shorter antenna is slightly less efficient (which is an interesting finding in itself), but the gains made using the longer wire might have undesirable side effects in terms of radiation pattern etc. Another great point from Peter was in regards to the matching between the ESP C3 and chip antenna, it’s bad… there is so much reflected power that it causes overheating in the ESP, so reducing the Tx power in software can actually increase the performance, which is counterintuitive but tally’s with what some people have noted in the comments! Very interesting information and thanks again to Peter for the original design and great insight!
