🧐A sunken forest that can be seen in the sand at low tide on the Sussex coast is thought to be at least 6,000 years old - and a relic of a time when sea levels were about 100ft lower than today. Walking on the beach on low tides feels like you’re walking on an ancient forest, stumps, trees everywhere…. Its spongy tree roots and branches emerge from beneath heaps of sand, rocks, barnacles and mussels when the tide goes out. Remains of the trees can be identified as oak, birch and hazel, saplings have been spotted standing in the sand, and walkers have gathered hazelnuts carbon-dated to 5,200 BC. The forest is thought to have been preserved after sea levels rose and flooded the woodland. Twisted and smoothed by the tides, the soggy wood is strewn with barnacles and peppered with lots of holes made by piddocks ,burrowing shellfish which have made the logs their home. But this is not just driftwood. These are ancient trees, their stumps still rooted to the spot where they died due to rising sea levels up to 6000 years ago. The trees are soft enough to break and poke a finger into - one way people differentiate between forest wood and remains of old sea defences is to see if the timber is hard or spongy. Centuries ago, the area would have been freshwater marshland with trees growing, and the coastline much further out than it is now. Pett Level has also attracted A:list celebrities throughout its time. Also the beach was the filming location for parts of the video of David Bowie's 1980 number one hit single 'Ashes to Ashes', while the beach scenes in the Alice in Wonderland 1966 TV film were also filmed there.❣️ #forest #forestlife #england #englishcity #englishcounty #beach #sunkenland #sunkenforest#ancienthistory #ancient #ancientstory #pettlevelbeach#travel #thingstoseeengland#historyfacts #historymystery #historylovers #historyuncovered #historyexplained #history #eastsussex
