Hurricane Hugo was a powerful Category 5 storm that devastated the northeastern Caribbean and the southeastern United States in September 1989. It was the strongest and costliest hurricane to hit the U.S. in 20 years, causing 67 deaths and $11 billion in damage. On September 22, Hugo made landfall just north of Charleston, SC at Sullivan's Island as a Category 4 storm with winds of 135-140 mph and a pressure of 934 millibars. Hugo brought tremendous wind and storm surge damage along the coast, as well as significant wind damage inland. Many buildings in downtown Charleston were damaged or destroyed, and thousands of trees were toppled. The storm also affected the power grid, leaving 80% of South Carolina without electricity. Hugo was a historic and catastrophic hurricane that left a lasting impact on the people and places it hit.
