In this episode of my series “ New Forest Walks”, I take a 4.5 mile circular-ish walk from Cadman's Pool which is located South West of Fritham. As well as my normal walking companion, Logan the Whippet, I was joined by special guest – well known New Forest artist Peter Frost. I parked my car at the free Forestry England car park at Cadman's Pool where I met up with Peter Frost. We initially made our way North West, downhill, towards the Dockens Water, before walking along the banks of the river to Holly Hatch Cottage. At that point, we crossed the Dockens Water & headed uphill along a track to the Sloden Inclosure. Shortly after entering the inclosure, we headed West to our main destination – the iconic Elephant Oak (a recent finalist in the UK “Tree of the Year” competition. At this point, Peter started the process of making an oil painting of the tree. Whilst he was painting, Logan & I explored the remains of a Medieval Royal Hunting lodge within the enclosure as well as enjoying the views of the Hasley Inclosure from the Western side of Sloden Inclosure. Once Peter had finished the initial part of his painting, we continued on our walk, past Splash Bridge & back to Cadman's Pool. About three weeks later, Logan & I visited Peter's Art Studio to view the final, finished painting of The Elephant Oak. During the video, I had the opportunity of interviewing Peter, asking him about his time not only as an artist but also as a New Forest Verderer. Peter has his own Youtube Channel called “Frost Ramblings” where he regularly publishes short videos on subjects such as painting, fishing and country aspects …. all related to the New Forest.
