Why do planes need to get this certification, what is it good for and how is it done. …. Now, what is the reason for such testing and certification? Mainly, it’s all about the performance of the plane after being exposed to these extreme temperatures, without any sources of heat to prevent the crucial parts from cooling down too far. While resting for the previously mentioned 12 hours, everything cools down to the outside temperature. That brings some issues, starting with the materials an aircraft is made of. When cooled, metal and other materials have the characteristic that they contract. The problem here is, that different materials contract at different rates, meaning that some materials contract more than others at the same temperature. In aviation, a variety of materials is used for different purposes.
