The city borders Urumqi to the northwest, Changji Prefecture to the north, Hami City to the east, and Bayingolin Prefecture to the south and west. It is located at the southern foot of the eastern Tianshan Mountains, with Turpan Basin in the north and Kumtag Desert and South Lake Gobi in the south. There are Bogda Mountains to the north and Kuruktag Mountains to the south. Aiding Lake, located in the center of Turpan Basin, is 154 meters lower than the sea level, which is the lowest elevation in Chinese Mainland. The total area of the city is 69759 square kilometers, with a population of 651900. The Municipal People's Government is located at 495 Lvzhou East Road, Gaochang District.
