I've always had a soft spot for the Mercedes 190E DTM, so much so that it's generally my first choice for trying out things, mods, new features or just having fun on various racing simulators (Assetto Corsa, RaceRoom and Automobilista 2). Obviously getting some on-board footage in reality has always been a desire of mine too. Thanks to the kindness of the guys at Wüstefeld Motorsport, my friend Italiansupercarvideo and I managed to put a camera inside the cockpit of Markus Wüstefeld's 190E during the qualifying session of the 2025 Tourenwagen Golden Ära (a series born with the idea to bring DTM, Group A and STW cars from the 1980s and 1990s back to the racetrack) at the Nürburgring. Markus 190E is a former AMG-Mercedes team car and it was driven by Roland Asch during the 1993 DTM Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft, finishing runner-up that season. To the less experienced it might seem aesthetically strange compared to a classic 190E Evolution II DTM but that's how some Mercedes cars were set up in their last DTM season. In fact, 1993 saw the introduction of the new FIA Class 1 Touring Cars regulations along with Class 2 Touring Cars, these officially becoming known as Super Touring cars from 1995. The German championship adopted Class 1 regulations which permitted more liberal modifications to the vehicles than the previous Group A regulations. The engines could have a maximum of six cylinders, 2.5 litres capacity and four valves per cylinder. All-wheel drive, traction control, anti-lock brakes and electronically controlled differentials were permitted such as chassis and aerodynamics modifications, which could be done also from race to race. Alfa Romeo and Opel entered the championship with cars developed around the new regulations. In 1993, Mercedes-Benz introduced the C-Class W202 to the global market but they didn't have the Class 1 touring car version ready yet. A short-term interim solution was found by converting the existing Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II from the DTM Group A into a Class 1 version. Fenders were widened, a more aerodynamic body was fitted, such as a more refined rear wing, and some weight removed here and there. The engine was still based on the Evolution II Group A: a Cosworth-developed 2.5-liter, naturally-aspirated inline-4 engine able to produce around 380hp and rev up to 10,000 rpm. The gearbox was a dogleg, 6-speed H-shifter sending the power to the rear wheels. Despite being an older and less powerful car than the 155 V6s of the competition, the car still managed to defend itself very well throughout the season. The 190E you see in this video has been used by Markus Wüstefeld during various races of the German Hill Climb Championship in the past. He's now using every now and then for exhibitions or historic races but only on the race track, keeping it in a sort of 'conservative/safe mode', with a rev limiter set at 9,500 rpm. #Mercedes190E #Mercedes190EEvo2 #Mercedes190EDTM ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have to thank my friend and youtuber @Italiansupercarvideo for the great collaboration done.
