July 10, 2012 Full Title: The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It https://baychi.org/calendar/20120710/ Self-control is one of the few positive self-attributes that most people don't claim they possess to an above average degree. Interaction designers and web researchers can directly apply some of the insights that have guided Kelly McGonigal's research and teaching. Although many apps and websites offer to monitor and improve health/wellness, psychological research shows how tricky it can be to maintain positive behavior. Telling a person that they're on track can paradoxically license them to indulge in counterproductive behavior. When trying to motivate persistence, some types of feedback are more successful than others. The cognitive load required by the most interesting software & websites can easily result in decision fatigue. Kelly's talk will draw from her research, which has been reported in her recent book, The Willpower Instinct, and taught in The Science of Willpower, her Stanford continuing education course that has drawn record enrollments.
