The BIGGEST MONUMENT in Srbia to STEFAN NEMANJA - Two-Day Back Pack WALKING ADVENTURE SERBIA

During this two-days walking adventure in Belgrade, we passed 36,000 steps, 21 km and enjoyed in spirit of capital city of Serbia, people, sounds, buildings and atmosphere. That will be not an option if we used a car. MONUMENT TO STEFAN NEMANJA is 23.5 meters high and five meters below the ground, weighing about 80 tons, and the pedestal is a kind of open-air museum, because around the scepter of the monument are mounted fragments of a Byzantine helmet with mosaics inside, representing parts of the life of Stefan Nemanja. The plateau around the monument is paved with stone cubes more than 100 years old, which were found during the works in the immediate vicinity of Sava Square. This monument is unique in the world because instead of a classic pedestal, it is located on a broken Byzantine helmet with reliefs inside that represent parts of the life of Stefan Nemanja and the history of then-Serbia. It has a body made of bronze, the so-called a "well" with a glazed floor through which citizens can see the underground part of the monument, and this effect of infinity shows that "the monument grows from the center of the earth through the centuries." There can be about 50 people in the helmet, and it is a kind of open-air museum, while there will be a fountain with 46 nozzles and special lighting around the monument. A large Studenica cross was carved on the monument, which symbolizes the security and peace of faith. The cross is also around Stefan Nemanja's neck, while he holds a raised sword in his hand. On the pedestal of the monument, there are also carved depictions of Hilandar and Studenica, as two of our shrines founded by the great Serbian prefect. STEFAN NEMANJA was the Grand Prince of Serbian Grand Principality also known as Raška from 1166 to 1196. A member of the Vukanović dynasty, Nemanja founded the Nemanjić dynasty, and is remembered for his contributions to Serbian culture and history, founding what would evolve into the Serbian Empire, as well as the national church. According to the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Nemanja is also among the most remarkable Serbs for his literary contributions and altruistic attributes. In 1196, after three decades of warfare and negotiations, including the Third Norman invasion of the Balkans (1185-1186) which consolidated Serbia while distinguishing it from both Western and Byzantine spheres of influence, Nemanja abdicated in favour of his middle son Stefan Nemanjić, who later became the first King of Serbia. Nemanja ultimately went to Mount Athos, where he became a monk and took the name of Simeon, joining his youngest son (later known as Saint Sava), who had already become the first archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Together with his son Saint Sava, Nemanja restored the Hilandar Monastery at Mount Athos from 1198 to 1199, and issued the "Charter of Hilandar". The monastery thus became the center of Serbian Orthodox monasticism at Athos. Shortly after his death, Serbian Orthodox Church canonized Stefan Nemanja, under the name Saint Simeon the Myrrh-streaming. SAVA SQUARE: Until the second half of the 19th century, there was a large pond in the area of Sava Square, called the Gypsy Pond or often incorrectly the Pond of Venice. The creation of the square followed the construction of the Railway Station building, so that the square was formed by 1884. Numerous state events were held in the square in front of the train station. During the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Belgrade, a reception and military parade was organized on Sava Square in honor of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor Charles I and Empress Zita of Bourbon-Parma, during their short visit to the city in 1918. Numerous foreign state and military delegations were welcomed at the station, always in the presence of a large number of people on the square. During the funeral of King Alexander Karadjordjevic in October 1934, the people gathered in Wilson Square to greet and send his remains on the way to Oplenac. Upon his return from the trip, Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito would give speeches at the Square of Brotherhood and Unity.
