This catch was not the plan at all. I showed up to the Santa Ana River Jetties around 5 in the morning planning to target surf perch, not halibut. Parked on the street and got flashed by a game warden who thought I was about to fish the inner jetty illegally. Good start to the morning. Once I got in the water I met two new anglers, Kelly and Dean. Both of them ended up being from West Covina which is crazy since I live in Azusa. I met them separately and they were both cool guys. Kelly kept saying he wanted a halibut that morning, so it’s funny that I ended up hooking one instead. I tied on the LITMA 110 Minnow just messing around and out of nowhere the halibut hit. First one ever. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I got so hyped I started joking around and singing about not being skunked. It was a solid moment and one of my favorite mornings out there.
