The google map used shows houses but in 1987 there were no houses there and the road was a dirt road. The small x's show the ambushes positions as per the SAP investigations. 1987 arrived and with it the horror of losing someone close, Sergeant Nel took fire from a four point ambush in Ntuzuma township. I was first on scene, 01h30 in the morning, no one around just a vehicle with so many bullet holes , truth be told I expected to be shot advancing on the vehicle by myself, cordite was thick in the air. Its something I will never forget, my fear of survival and my ear of seeing my colleague and buddy all shot up laying in the cab of the Toyota van, he was laying there dying , his crew Howard had made his way to the back of the vehicle where he had climbed in, he was laying there with two through shots to his left arm, he said it happened when he raised his firearm, he had a bullet center chest, but I could see the back of the bullet so this was a ricochet that had struck him, not enough power to penetrate deeper into his chest. The worst was an arterial shot to his leg and blood was spraying out, I used pieces of his shirt I tore off and a stick laying nearby to create a tourniquet, unfortunately Howard was not listening to me when I said he must release the tourniquet in 20 mins, allow it to bleed and retighten it. Sgt Nell had six 7.62 rounds through his chest and I had no way of stopping that huge trauma it had caused. He died there in that vehicle cab while waiting for an ambulance, they performed CPR and brought him back just from him to die again 5 mins later. Howard did survive but lost his leg due to the tourniquet not been released for a few hours.
