On Thursday, August 24, 2023, the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works conducted a cleanup operation aimed at addressing health and safety concerns at homeless encampments located on Main Street, Strongs Drive and Mildred Avenue in Venice. The main goal of this effort was to tackle notable health and safety issues affecting both unhoused individuals and the general public. Sanitation workers, dressed in white hazardous materials suits, followed strict safety protocols during the operation. The cleanup operation was executed by two distinct waste management teams, each with specific responsibilities. The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, distinguished by their yellow safety vests, joined forces with the Clean Harbors Environmental Services Inc. team, identified by their orange safety vests. The Clean Harbors team initiated the process by carefully sorting through refuse to identify and segregate hazardous materials such as batteries, syringes, and urine. Subsequently, Los Angeles Public Works sanitation workers took charge of collecting the remaining non-hazardous waste. During the cleanup, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) was present on-site, offering outreach services to unhoused individuals in need, aiming to assist those experiencing homelessness and fulfill their essential requirements. To ensure the safety of all individuals involved and to ensure cooperation from the unhoused population, Los Angeles Police Officers maintained a continuous presence during the entire cleanup operation, which aimed to uphold cleanliness and hygiene standards in the area. While the cleanup of homeless encampments in Venice has positive implications for public health and safety, it's important to acknowledge that it doesn't present a long-term solution to the broader issue of homelessness. The City of Los Angeles is actively working on implementing comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of homelessness and provide essential resources and support to those in need. The City of Los Angeles remains committed to addressing homelessness in the region and will persist in its efforts to discover sustainable, lasting solutions. In conclusion, the recent cleanup operation in Venice represents a notable progression in improving public health, safety, and the availability of necessary resources for unhoused individuals. The City of Los Angeles continues its dedicated work toward addressing homelessness and striving for enduring solutions. ‐---------------------------------------------------------- Fabian Lewkowicz is a Santa Monica-based photojournalist, press photographer, and the creator of the photo blog, Santa Monica Close Up.
