Tonight, after a long day giving a leadership training to a group of executives, I sat down at the organ and played this Preludium in E-flat by the Czech composer Josef Seger — almost prima vista. I liked its energy and drive so much that I decided to record it right away. Seger was the most prolific Czech organ composer of the 18th century. Hundreds of preludes, fugues, toccatas, and other organ works survive in manuscript form — though not all attributions are certain. His preludes and fugues are usually short (likely due to the constraints of the Catholic liturgy), yet they reveal a fertile harmonic imagination and a masterful grasp of late Baroque counterpoint. Besides his organ music, Seger composed masses, motets, and psalm settings — all rich in traditional counterpoint. Born Josef Ferdinand Norbert Segert (also spelled Seeger or Seegr), he studied philosophy at Charles University in Prague and music under Bohuslav Matěj Černohorský, Jan Zach, and others. He later became organist of two churches in Prague, where he served until his death. In this recording, I play the Predigerkirche organ in Erfurt at full organ — a majestic sound fitting for Seger’s powerful prelude.
