It could be argued the Canadian team did not take the Soviet national team serious enough, although since the Soviets first captured the World Championship in the 1950s it would be difficult to say they did not have fair warning. The World Championships had never featured the very best Canada had to offer and hence any losses were shrugged off as "that was not our best team." But now Canada did have their best team, or at least the best available. Bobby Orr was injured and unable to play due to his ongoing knee injuries, and Team Canada shot itself in the foot by excluding one of the best players in the world, Bobby Hull, who was banned because he signed a contract with the newly formed World Hockey Association. Other good players such as Mike Walton, Derek Sanderson, Andre Lacroix were all excluded for the same reason. But minus a handful of notable exceptions Canada brought the best players available to Montreal to face off against the Soviet nationals. The team and the nation were in for a rude awakening. These were no amateur chumps, and they came in full fitness and readiness. Enjoy Game 1.
