Simple Massage for the Anxious EPM Horse

One of our EPM horses was having some anxiety in his stall as the storm rolled in this afternoon. The noise and weather change was making him really restless, so I got him out just so he could have the comfort of having people near. Thought we didn't get his initial panic on video, you can see how much he relaxed from just standing in the aisle to having a bit of light massage on his face. I can't even really call these "techniques," I basically just let my hands wander until I find a spot of tension and then I hold until I feel a release. It's nothing fancy, but it certainly works on a variety of horses. Sometimes I think owners get to caught up in "wanting to do XYZ technique" or feeling like only a professional can do massage.... I want to encourage you to.... Let your hands guide you. Let your horse guide you. They will tell you if they like your touch or not. Don't get so caught up in the details that you miss an opportunity to just bond with your horse. There's definitely a time and place for correct technique and professional skill, but there's also a time and place to just let your energy flow and connect with the horse.....
