What if your French language class opened the door to global literary exploration—and gave you the power to help choose one of the most prestigious prizes in the francophone world? As part of FR 322: Movements and Perspectives, students in the College of LAS at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign participated in the Choix Goncourt US—the American counterpart to France’s Prix Goncourt, awarded annually since 1903. This immersive course invited students to dive deep into four nominated novels, explore the impact of literary prizes, and reflect on how stories shape identity and global understanding. After thoughtful discussion, students selected "Triste tigre" as their winner and elected a delegate to travel to New York, joining students from across the country to help decide the national awardee. It’s just one example of how a French language class at Illinois goes far beyond the basics, giving students the chance to explore the world through literature, connect with readers across borders, and apply language skills in powerful, real-world contexts. If you're looking to take French classes that spark curiosity and push you beyond the classroom, LAS offers some of the most dynamic and eye-opening courses around.
