Iron Rot (US) — Desiccation / Desolation / Retribution — 2025 EP

The second EP from this Seattle-based trio. This sophomore EP is a commanding piece of black metal that showcases the band’s ability to seamlessly blend black metal’s ferocity but with some nuances. On this release we see Iron Rot refine their already eclectic sound, merging black metal with elements of black ‘n’ roll, speed metal, and even subtly nodding to punk. While their debut hinted at these diverse influences, it occasionally struggled with cohesion. On this follow-up, however, the transitions feel natural, even inevitable, as though the trio has fully realized their voice. The opening moments immediately pull the listener into a storm of unrelenting riffs and puncturing percussion and vibrant vocals and from there, the record alternates between pummelling aggression and moments of sumptuous saccharine respite in the form of speed or almost heavy metal patterns. The black metal passages, in particular, stand out for their sharpened focus and heightened intensity, bolstered by an impassioned vocal performance that conveys rage and defiance. The closing track, “Eulogy of the Once Fertile Mother" is particularly poignant, its mournful tones serving as a lament for what has been lost and a call to action for what might still be salvaged. Iron Rot has not only refined their sound but also sharpened their message, presenting this time a declaration against the forces of destruction, challenging its listeners to look beyond the music and confront the world around them.
