The project involves 12 poets reciting poems on one topic then receiving commentary from an audience. Islam Poetry Slam will have monthly writing sessions, travel to different cities and countries reciting poems, and the release of an album. What does the western Muslim mind think? How does poetry, art, and language transition from culture to culture? Islam Poetry Slam employs a dynamic platform to explore the boundaries of spoken word and freedom of expression. About The Poets: Amir Sulaiman is a grammy nominated poet featured in Variety, USA Today, The Tonight Show, and HBO's Def Poetry Jam. Layla Naji is a professor and psychologist. Nouri Sardar is a poet, author, and filmmaker. Nabeala Salem is a recent UC San Diego graduate. Sherwin Nooravi is a competitive slam poet. Sukeinah Kassir is a writer, poet, mother and educationist. Kawther Rahmani is an international award winning writer featured in The Los Angeles Times, and New York Times. Zaki Haider is an accountant and lamentation reciter. Jamesa Fields is a poet, fashion designer, filmmaker featured in The Los Angeles Times, Press Enterprise, The Oregonian, and Chicago Tribune. Zachary Abbas is a senior student at UCLA majoring in International Development. Asiya Bint Komail is a 11 year old 5th grader who has been reciting poetry since she was 4 years old. Zain Kassamali is a executive MBA candidate and entrepreneu About The Creators: Mukhtar Ali is a lifestyle designer. His links with and understanding of the entertainment industry are strong. Some companies he's worked with include: Universal Music Group, Interscope, Sony, MTV, VH1, Frankie B., Parasuco, and others. He has been trained by some of the world’s most recognized directors and photographers, like David LaChapelle and Joseph Khan. He is formerly VP of A&R for Uprising Records. He has worked with Paris Hilton to 50 Cent, Mariah Carey to George Michael, Jessica Simpson to DMX, Pamela Anderson to Eminem and more as a wardrobe stylist. He has also worked as a journalist conducting over 100 interviews. Mark has a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Fashion Design and Marketing, and has studied and traveled to Los Angeles, New York, London, Milan, Paris, India, China, Tokyo, Iraq, and Iran. He is currently pursuing Masters and Doctorate Degree’s in Business. He’s directed for Tila Tequila, Raekwon, Game, and others. His directing work has been featured on MTV, XXL Magazine, WorldStarHipHop, Global Grind and other major media outlets. Zain Kassamali is an entrepreneur, Vice President of A&R Box and Packaging, works with companies like Oakley, Costco, Obey clothing, and several apparel manufacturers. He is a poet, executive MBA candidate from Chapman university, and former top producing sales rep for a multinational telecom company.
