A pre-meditated bank robbery, which would become the first crime of any type to be documented live on television to the masses, would be carried out. Jan-Erik Olsson, a convict who was on furloughed release from prison and had disappeared during him allotment of time from release, entered the Norrmalmstorg branch of Kreditbanken with one aim - an attempt to make off with different valuables stored in the bank's vault: deposit boxes, safes and cash hidden behind a door which he would later find himself behind of. As he carried out his plan to steal from the bank, he took 4 hostages as leverage in the case that the police were notified...and they soon were; within minutes of his actions, police had already arrived and were taking post for a potential shootout. They couldn't risk an already renowned career-criminal escaping from their clutches again. It took the police 5 days of meticulous planning and observation of each scenario inside of the bank's vault to finally breach Olsson's rudimentary position; and using tear gas, with water hoses being the proposed plan initially, they implemented a wide-bore drill with no resistance from Olsson, successfully allowing special task force officers entrance into the vault and the ability for his eventual arrest. Within literal seconds, he was lifted brought through the basement ceiling and lead out into the street in handcuffs escorted by several armed policemen clad in ballistic vests and gas masks. Consequently, he was remanded in custody and later sentenced to 10 years for the act. As for his hostages, their views of the police were those of distrust. Over the 5 days they experienced locked inside of the vault, they had witnessed what they saw in their eyes as brutality and violence from the police and had started to develop a sympathetic bond with their captor as they days went on.
