Legends of Electromagnetics: Prof. Akira Ishimaru

Akira Ishimaru is a Japanese-born American engineer, educator, researcher, and author, and is Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Washington. Akira Ishimaru was born and raised in Kyushu, Japan. He received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan in 1951. He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States, and received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington (UW) in 1958, becoming the first person to be awarded a doctorate in electrical engineering at the UW. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington. He became Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1965, and an Adjunct Professor of Applied Mathematics in 1977. He became Professor Emeritus in 1998. Professor Ishimaru’s research focus is the development of statistical theories and applications related to electromagnetic wave propagation in random and complex media. The characteristics of such media are randomly varying in space and time; therefore, statistical treatments are essential to understand and characterize their effects on electromagnetic waves. His research areas include multiple scattering theories and techniques, remote sensing, object detection, inverse problems, and millimeter waves, in the atmosphere as well as on planetary surfaces, including effects of scattering from rough surfaces, terrain, and ocean surfaces. Examples of important applications of these statistical approaches include communications through complex and random natural environments such as the atmosphere, oceans, or space, and medical techniques involving scanning of biological media such as the human body which have randomly varying characteristics. Dr. Ishimaru has conducted studies of back scattering enhancement, time reversal imaging, and time reversal MUSIC (multiple-signal-classification) imaging techniques for use in a clutter environment, and conducted early studies on optical diffusion in whole blood and tissue, vector radiative transfer, and time dependent radiative transfer, concepts that are important in microwave remote sensing. His current research interests include the study of quantum theory as viewed from the perspective of classical electromagnetics. Akira Ishimaru is the author of Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media (New York: Academic, 1978, and IEEE-Oxford University Press classic reissue, 1997) and Electromagnetic Wave Propagation, Radiation, and Scattering (Englewood Cliffs, NJ; Prentice Hall, 1991). A revised and expanded second edition of Electromagnetic Wave Propagation, Radiation, and Scattering was published by IEEE Press-Wiley in 2017. Professor Ishimaru was editor of Radio Science from 1979 to 1982, and founding Editor of Waves In Random Media (Institute of Physics, U.K.) and Waves In Random And Complex Media (Taylor and Francis, U.K.) He was a member of the Editorial Board of Proceedings of the IEEE from 1973 to 1983, and served as a member-at-large of the U.S. National Committee (USNC). He was chairman of Commission B of the USNC/International Union of Radio Science from 1985 to 1987. Akira Ishimaru is a Fellow of the IEEE, the Optical Society of America, the Acoustical Society of America and the Institute of Physics, U.K. He was the recipient of the 1968 IEEE Region VI Achievement Award and the IEEE Centennial Medal in 1984. He was appointed as Boeing Martin Professor in the UW College of Engineering in 1993. In 1995 he was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996. In 1998, he was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award from the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society. He is the recipient of the 1998 IEEE Heinrich Hertz Medal and the 1999 URSI Dellinger Gold Medal. In 2000, he received the IEEE Third Millennium Medal. In 2011 he received the Diamond Award for Distinguished Achievement in Academia, from the University of Washington College of Engineering. He became an URSI Lifetime Fellow in 2020. IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society had the pleasure to record this interview with Prof. Akira Ishimaru in which he discusses his early interest in STEM, and his research career.
