Connect with a specialist: http://bit.ly/1k6W3Dw The future holds incredible promise for curing children with congenital heart and other birth defects. The first surgeons in the world to engineer tissue-engineered vascular grafts using a child's own cells are beginning revolutionary clinical trials at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Christopher Breuer and Dr. Toshiharu Shinoka are co-directors of the Tissue Engineering Program at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The team surgically placed the first tissue-engineered vascular graft in the United States. Their first patient is a 3-year-old girl named Angela Irizarry, who suffered from congenital single ventricle heart disease, meaning she was born with one ventricle to do the work of two. Traditionally, children born with this malformation undergo open heart surgery using a synthetic graft to repair the defect. The problem is, as children grow, they outgrow the graft and require multiple open heart surgeries throughout life. With tissue engineering, the child's own cells are seeded onto a biodegradable scaffold. The scaffold provides sites for cell attachment and within two months, the scaffold is absorbed into the body and a functioning blood vessel remains. Because the surgery is performed using the child's own cells, there is only need for one surgery to cure the child. Today, little Angela is healthy and thriving following her surgery. Clinical trials will begin at Nationwide Children's this year, and Drs. Breuer and Shinoka expect to evolve the technology to include additional clinical applications in the coming years.
